School planning ensures that the Board’s Mission, Vision and Values are reflected consistently in the day-to-day operation of our schools and in the development, delivery and monitoring of programs. Planning for school and student improvement continues to be a key part of each school’s responsibilities. Using a data-driven process, school planning teams engage the school community in discussing and supporting school and student improvement.
A common set of data, gathered at every school, provides the basis to support local decisions about school and student achievement.
The current School Improvement Plan for Hartman Public School focuses on the following:
- Curriculum and Student Achievement. As a school we are working to deepen student ability to think critically, to organize their thinking, and to make their thinking visible through a variety of explicit thinking routines. We continue to focus on improvement in primary reading and junior and intermediate math as indicated through assessment of our report card and EQAO data.
- School Climate. We continue to focus on building a safe and inclusive learning environment for all students. This year, we are working to ensure that student voice and parent voices are included in our Positive Climates for Learning committee work. Our work this year is geared to ensure that all students feel safe at all times, especially at recess times. To this end, we have developed a leadership program for junior students called “Wee Heroes” where these students organize and help to supervise games and activities for primary students. We have opened up the library for students to work at morning recesses. We are currently working to establish a peer mentor group that will work under the leadership of trained staff to support students in solving minor problems. We will also be opening a games room at morning recesses where students may go to just hang out and play some games together and where they can access a safe and supportive staff member to listen and help with problems.
- Parent and Community Engagement. Our school motto is “Many voices; One song.” As such, we welcome and encourage the voices of our many community members in helping to create an inclusive school. We have a very active School Council at Hartman and we work together with them to offer a wide variety of community events including: parent information evenings, Winter Wonderland family event and the Hartman Fun Fair. We welcome many volunteers in many roles including supporting our primary reading program, helping out in some of our classrooms and the library and supporting the many extra-curricular opportunities available throughout the year.
